Update: As of June 25, 2018, Zaycon Fresh has suspended business operations until further notice.
The internet abounds with glowing reviews of Zaycon Foods – this is not one of them. This is an honest review of the product my family experienced from Zaycon.
Two months ago I heard about an awesome deal on chicken breasts through a company called Zaycon. If I purchased 40 pounds of chicken breasts, and picked it up in 2 months, I could get it for 99 cents a pound! What? There was no way I was going to pass up that deal of a lifetime!
Fast forward two months later, the chicken pickup day arrives. The entire family is so curious about this concept of going to pick up this massive box of chicken. So we all pile into the minivan and drive 3 miles down the road to pickup our deal of a century. Even the dog has to come because her favorite food is chicken.
We arrive at the church parking lot where they are distributing the meat and know we are at the right place because we see the big Zaycon Foods truck. There is a line of cars waiting to pick up their meat. As we wait in line, I notice on the side of the truck it says, “Zaycon Foods…A Weird Company”. I thought that was a bit odd, but onward to pick up our deal of a lifetime!
As we get to the front of the line, they ask for our name, where we would like the box, and put it exactly where we requested. Five minutes total and we were out of there.
After we arrived back home we brought the box inside. Immediately we noticed there was no expiration date. Hmmm…another oddity. It did have a packing date, but no expiration date? That was strange.
I opened the 40 lb. box and saw that it was divided into four 10 lb. packages. I decided I would just tackle one 10 lb. package for today and put the other three packages in the freezer for later.
As I opened the 10 lb. package and began to pull out chicken breasts I noticed how huge the chicken breasts were. They were the most massive chicken breasts I’d ever seen and they were tough! These don’t look or feel like “young chickens” (as was described on the packaging). That’s okay I thought, we’ll just pound them down in order to make them tender.
As I began washing them and cutting them up, I began to notice I was cutting off a ton of bad parts. When I was said and done, out of the 10 lb. original package, only 7 lbs. of the chicken was actually good, edible chicken.
Of course we decided to have chicken that night for dinner. We tenderized the tough breasts, made the meal, and we even baked some plain chicken for our pup.
Some of the chicken was okay, some of it was still tough and chewy (even after tenderizing it). I did not personally care for the flavor of the chicken. To make matters worse, our dog ended up getting sick from eating the chicken.
As of this writing, Zaycon’s website states that they “provide a 30-day refund policy to cover any issues that may arise with your purchased product(s).” Great, I thought, I’ll just contact Zaycon and get a refund for the bad chicken.
I contacted Zaycon through their website and gave a detailed description of the issue I had with their chicken. I received an email back from a Customer Service Representative stating that I needed to send them “a description of the issue and pictures of the product and the label on the box”. After I did that, then they would then get back to me in 2-3 business days.
Remember, I already sent them a detailed description of the issue I had. Why in the world did they need pictures of a product they knew I was in possession of? Okay, I’ll go along with what they want.
I sent them everything they requested in another email and after a couple business days, I finally heard back from them. They did not issue me a “refund”, but instead issued me a credit to my “Zaycon Fresh account”. If I wanted a full refund to my credit card, I would have to call into their office and give them all the credit card details (keep in mind they had all of this information from my purchase before).
Knowing that I’ll never, ever buy a Zaycon product again, I called in and spoke with a Customer Service Representative. I gave her all my credit card information and, of course, the final Zaycon kicker was that it would take up to 10 business days for my credit card to be refunded!
For sure, their truck said it all, “Zaycon Foods…A Weird Company”.
Have you had any experiences (positive or negative) with Zaycon? I’d love to hear about them in the comments section below!
